I fell in love with painting as a little girl in Romania. Many years later, that love found its way back to me.
I grew up in a small town in Romania, and drawing came easily to me from the start. I painted through my whole childhood, and I loved it. But life asked me to choose: family, work, making ends meet, and eventually a move across Europe. The brushes were put away. Not thrown out. Just put away.
A few years ago, a television programme caught me off guard and brought it all rushing back. I bought a canvas that same week. The joy, it turned out, hadn't gone anywhere. It had been waiting.
Since then, painting has become my quiet corner of the day, here in Dublin, where I live now. Spring trees, lavender fields, the Carpathian mountains of home, red flowers in a black vase, all the things that make me stop and look. When a piece is finished I sign it, varnish it and wrap it myself, and I'm always a little sad to see it go.
